I am writing regarding the deliberations which are emerging in Jones County with the possible construction of a multi-million-dollar Law Enforcement Center.
There is no doubt public safety needs to be a “high” priority in Jones County. Yet, we must be efficient and effective with the limited fiscal and demographic resources in Jones County. The population of Jones County for the past two to three decades has essentially been stable.
I am reminded of a political science professor (Erma Plaehn) many years ago who indicated the primary reason for 99 counties in Iowa was to ensure every citizen could get to their county courthouse by horse and buggy within a day. We obviously have passed the horse and buggy era. Further, many services which we receive such as mental health and education are now delivered from a regional perspective. Further, the Cedar Rapids Gazette on December 18th referenced conversations which have started regarding Johnson and Linn counties considering a regional law enforcement center.
I am firmly convinced Jones County needs to initiate conversations regarding a regional approach to the Law Enforcement Center and services. We should be exploring processes and facilities which include sharing of facilities and services. We need to be sure as citizens and taxpayers that any changes in public safety services are the most efficient and effective system for years to come. The exploration should involve some citizen input to ensure diverse perspectives are part of the conversation.
